songs: The Price of Life

Written in 2005 about signing a record deal.

I live like an island
‘Cause sometimes it’s right to be wrong
But if working life means compromise
Tell me, where does an island belong?

I slaved to build a mountain
I raised it up from the ground
But the industry is on to me
And they paid me to tear it back down

[c]
Is it so hard to believe
That I’d bite the hand that feeds
Both sides of the fight?
I – I – I – I –I – I – I – I
Put a price on my life.

I tried to weigh my options
But even artist types need a home
And I hope someday I get to raise
A family of my own

And I’ll help my kids through college
‘Cause I’ll want for them the best
If a Sellout’s just doing what one must
Then I’m a Sellout like all of the rest

[c]

And it hurts a bit
But I’ll work through this alright
It hurts a bit but I’ll be fine.
