songs: Don’t Lie Awake

A friend of mine became pregnant, and I was on the other end. She decided that having a baby was not something she could reconcile with the life she'd built, and so she terminated the pregnancy. This is a song I wrote for her afterwards.

I doubt that I could have saved you
But I'm haunted by the thought
That I should have stayed through

Your broken smile
On bitten lips
Held a draw that I
Could not resist
I'll own the blame for everything.

[c]
Just Don't Lie Awake
It was a pardonable mistake
It was a pardonable mistake
We grow as we age
It was a pardonable mistake
It was a pardonable mistake
That I know we didn't mean to make.

I hope that you can forgive me
If I show you that I've grown, will you think differently?
I wasn't strong enough to love you right
I wasn't brave enough to try but I
Promise I was honest I

[c]

And I'd believe you if you said
"As time has gone, I didn't mean it"
And I'd believe you if you went
Along alone and said "I didn't need this”
Because I have seen you with your head down
And I know now that you've got secrets
Well if I am one, I hope you will keep me.
