songs: Common Cause

I'm not sure when I wrote this song or what inspired it, but I must have been eighteen or nineteen at the time.

We work hard
For what we’ve got
Hit rough roads along the way
But we don’t pay no mind to that
‘Cause we are all holding on
To this dream that was once had
In which a man cleansed his soul
And became one with it all again.

[c]
He wanted out
He wanted out
And he broke down all of their walls
He told them, “I’ll align myself
To the Common Cause”.

I was young
When I learned how
To make a moment last a mile
And make the miles trickle down
Cause when you’ve got a broken home
You can’t just fix it with some nails
You’ve got to grow a patient heart
And hope that love prevails.

[c]
I wanted out
I wanted out
And so I broke down all of my walls
I proclaimed, “I’ll align myself
To the Common Cause”.

I don’t know
Why we can’t all just get along
Nor why this plea should sound so weak
Amongst these cities of lonesome No-one’s
Who all show
That they are scared to death to die
Though they could all live better lives
If they would just recognize

[c]
That we want out
We really want out
So we should break down all of our walls
And we will all align ourselves
To the Common Cause.
