songs: Black and White
This song was written during my first touring season, around the summer of 2005.
A judge holds his gavel like a gun
Says, “I probably shouldn’t do this, son
But that’s a good head on your shoulders
And I can see you’ve grown older.”
And with that he let a guilty man walk home.
[c]
Now I don’t know why we always think we’re right
It looks like tonight we walked on the other side
But give it some time and soon I think you might
See that there’s something more to life than black and white.
An uncounted thousand miles away
There’s a similar hearing taking place
But there’s a different set of lawyers
And a different sense of order
So an innocent man was locked away
[c]
Don’t ask these simple questions
It’s known they can’t be answered
Don’t ask too many questions
You may find the truth hurts
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
I don’t want to know.
