songs: Belief

Written sometime before 2007, this was one of those stepping-stone-songs that you've got to write as an exercise.  It'll never be released, because it isn't good enough, but it exists, nonetheless.

I was ripe with hope
I was sparkling
When it was time to go
Find out everything
The people all around me said
“You’ll only be sucked in”
But those who don’t believe
Can never win
I gave my heart a shove
And we walked out that door
Though still quite unsure of
What we were working towards
I never did believe I’d see
It coming to an end
But those who don’t believe
Can never win

We all go down, down
To those places that we’ve never been before
And we don’t mean
All that we believe
Down, down
Cause’ we all make mistakes
That’s just the way we learn
But when it all boils down
You’ll see you’ve found belief

I’ve seen it in myself
I’ve seen it everywhere
Some say you call that “God”
But I don’t really care
The thoughts of which I’m speaking now
Can but be held within
And those who don’t believe
Can never win

Belief is when it all boils down
And still you find a way somehow
To take your time and work things out
It never leaves. It never leaves.
Belief is what you take to be your own
It’s what you honestly want
A melody, a memory, a song that you can sing
When the water comes to calm
When the water comes to calm
You’ll find you’re on the shore
And you’ll realize you want to go explore some more
You’ll prophesize another fall upon the horizon
But those who don’t believe can never win.
